The Blackdown Hills Riding Club, located in Taunton, New Zealand, has been a thriving equestrian community for over 50 years. Originally founded by a small group of individuals who sought to create a friendly and inclusive environment for families, the club remains committed to its core values of camaraderie and accessibility.
Our club is run by a motivated and friendly committee that strives to cater to the diverse needs of its members. From competitions to social events, we provide a range of activities that enable riders of all ages and abilities to participate and enhance their confidence and knowledge in the equestrian world.
Over the years, the Blackdown Hills Riding Club has expanded its reach, becoming involved in larger events by assisting with the organisation and management of Area 12 competitions. Our riders have even had the opportunity to compete in Championship competitions, which has been a source of great excitement and pride for the club.
One of the standout features of the BHRC is our dedicated dressage to music team. Comprising a musical director, choreographer, costume designer, and technical advisor, this team is always available to support and encourage anyone interested in trying their hand at musical dressage. The club has enjoyed success in this discipline, winning the local X Factor competition and achieving high placements through public votes.
Throughout the year, the BHRC hosts various events to keep our members engaged. During the winter and summer months, we organise a Dressage League series, with opportunities for both Clear Round Jumping and Spring and Autumn Shows when dressage isn't on the calendar. Additionally, our popular Summer Camp, held at the beginning of August, combines two days of training, hacks, show jumping, and a members-only dressage competition.
Training is a priority for our members, so we make arrangements at different locations with qualified trainers to provide diverse learning experiences. We especially welcome junior riders and have a dedicated committee section to represent and address their specific needs and interests. Throughout the year, we organise events tailored to the younger equestrians within our club.
Given the extensive geographic area our club covers, including Taunton, villages in the Blackdown Hills, Exeter, and even reaching as far as Minehead, we strive to make our training sessions and events accessible to as many people as possible. We schedule activities at various locations to accommodate our diverse membership.
While the past two years have presented significant challenges for all riding clubs, the Blackdown Hills Riding Club has persevered by adapting and embracing online events. To keep our horses and riders “show fit,” we held online photograph and video competitions. As the world gradually reopens, we are excited to resume in-person events, incorporating necessary COVID protocols to ensure the safety of all participants.
