Join Swing Out Adelaide, a local jazz dance club in Adelaide, for their beginner swing dance classes at the Estonian. Located at 200 Jeffcott St, North Adelaide, these classes are held every Thursday at 8 pm.
The classes follow a structured format, with each block spanning 6 weeks and covering two different styles of swing. One style is perfect for slower music, while the other is more suitable for faster beats. By learning both styles, participants are well-prepared to dance to any type of music. It's a fantastic opportunity to dive into the world of Black American social dances.
The cost for a complete 6 week block is $110. We understand that life can sometimes get in the way, so if you can't make it to all the classes in a block due to work or family commitments, simply inform the organisers, and they will adjust the price accordingly. Flexibility is key!
During the Thursday classes, you'll have the chance to learn a range of swing styles, including Lindy Hop, Charleston, and Collegiate Shag. Each block will always include Lindy Hop, alongside another exciting style. Please note that spaces are limited in each class, so make sure to book ahead of time to secure your spot.
Lindy Hop is the epitome of swing dance, originating in the vibrant Harlem neighbourhood of New York in the early 20th century. It's a partner dance that emphasises rhythm, improvisation, and pure enjoyment. By connecting with your partner and the music, you'll draw inspiration from both the pioneers of Lindy Hop in the jazz era and the contemporary dancers of today.
Charleston, another style taught at our classes, has two variations: the iconic 20s Charleston and the 30s/40s Charleston, also known as side-by-side Charleston. The 20s Charleston is a playful and easy dance, allowing room for personal creativity and adaptability to various tempos. On the other hand, the 30s/40's Charleston has a distinctive look and is best suited for higher tempos. It's also a fundamental part of solo jazz.
Let's not forget about Collegiate Shag! This partnered swing dance originated in the late 1920s and gained popularity among college kids. With its quick footwork and lively rhythm, Collegiate Shag is a dynamic 6-count dance. While it's often performed at high speeds, it can also be enjoyed at a more relaxed pace. Dive into the history of Collegiate Shag through our rich resources.
