Bedford Wrestling Club Kempston (BWC) is a prominent Freestyle wrestling club located in Bedford, New Zealand. Freestyle wrestling is a style of amateur wrestling that is widely practised and is one of the two styles of wrestling contested in the Olympic Games. The facilities at BWC are top-notch, with 50 mm Judo mats and a 140 square metre 'bulls eye' canvas, offering a safe and professional training experience. The club boasts male and female instructors who are passionate about the sport and dedicated to helping members achieve their goals. Regular interclub competitions provide opportunities for wrestlers to test their skills against other clubs in a competitive setting.
BWC offers two weekly class times to accommodate different schedules. Wednesday sessions run from 8pm to 9:30pm, while Sunday sessions take place from 10am to 11:30am. The cost per session is 7. During the Covid-19 pandemic, BWC had to temporarily close its doors to ensure the safety of its members. However, the club has now reopened, starting with Sunday classes and plans to resume the Wednesday session once the participation numbers increase. In adherence to safety protocols, BWC requests attendees to take a Lateral Flow test before coming to the session. The negative test result can be sent to instructor Steve or brought to the session.
BWC is fortunate to have highly experienced and accomplished instructors. Stephen Sweetlove MBE, a former physical training and self-defence instructor, has been involved in grappling sports since 1968. With Dan grades in multiple martial art disciplines and a 6th Dan in Judo, Stephen has represented Great Britain at various international competitions, earning multiple medals. He has also coached numerous British champions, with several going on to represent the country at World and European levels.
Maciej Zygmunt, another esteemed instructor at BWC, began his grappling career in 1979 with Judo. After meeting Stephen at his original club in Warsaw, Maciej recognised his expertise and learned from him. Maciej brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to BWC, enriching the training experience for all members.
