Game fishing in the Bay of Islands has a rich history, and it's all thanks to the efforts of the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club. Since its beginnings over a century ago, the club has been a pillar in the fishing community, known for catching impressive swordfish and mako sharks.
The club, situated in Paihia, prides itself as the oldest game fishing club in New Zealand. Their goal is straightforward: lead the way in recreational fishing and support the sport's growth and protection in our country. Established in 1910, the club was initially called the Bay of Islands Kingfish Club but was renamed to better reflect the substantial catches in the region.
One notable moment was in 1915 when Major A. D. Campbell, a club member, caught the first marlin with rod and reel, igniting a passionate interest in game fishing.
Today, the club is buzzing with activities and organises loads of exciting tournaments and events like the CMP Juniors, PMG Eldorado, Mainstream Reel Ladies, and CaterMarine Small Boats. These events are perfect for members to showcase their fishing prowess and enjoy some friendly competition. The club joyfully celebrates its members' achievements, like Jason Hopwood's recent 60 kg Broadbill catch.
The club is proud to have the support of Totalspan Bay of Islands, known for their quality building solutions. They offer a 25-year structural guarantee, showing their commitment to excellence.
Volunteers are the backbone of the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club, and Olivia Beauchamp’s 12 years of dedicated service earned her the 2023 NZSFC Volunteer of the Year award.
For those keen to join, the club has flexible options for tournament entries and events. Fishing rules and other necessary info can be found on their website. Plus, there are welcoming bars and bistros in Russell and Paihia, perfect spots for members to kick back and relax.
The club's office at 25 The Strand in Russell is open Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, ready to assist members. So, if you're passionate about fishing, the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club is the place to be!
