Welcome to Bayford Judo Club, located in Hertford, NZ. Bayford Judo Club has been running for approximately 5 years and offers Judo training for both juniors and seniors, starting from the age of 5. The club prides itself on creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all participants, regardless of their experience level.
Judo, which translates to the “gentle way”, focuses on the principle of flexibility in technique application. Rather than relying on brute strength, Judo emphasises skill, technique, and timing in order to achieve success. It can be seen as an art, a fun sport, a discipline, a recreational activity, a fitness programme, a means of self-defence, or even a way of life – the possibilities are endless.
At Bayford Judo Club, beginners are always welcome. Anybody who is interested in trying out Judo can join at any time, simply by showing up to a session wearing a loose sweat top and jogging bottoms. The club offers sessions for juniors aged 5 to 8, juniors aged 9 to 15, and adults aged 16 and above. Training sessions are held on Wednesday evenings, with junior sessions running from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and adult sessions from 8:00pm to 9:30pm.
The club is led by Head Coach Andrew Cowler, who holds a 2nd Dan Judo and FPJ Level 1 certification. Andrew has been practising Judo since 1990 and has 12 years of coaching experience. He is supported by a team of qualified coaches, including Greame Napier (1st Dan-FPJ Level 1), Kevin Field (1st Kyu-FJP Level 1), and Elaine Sutcliffe (3rd Kyu). All coaches have undergone Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks to ensure the safety and well-being of all club members, especially children.
In addition to regular training sessions, Bayford Judo Club also participates in various events and competitions. Throughout the year, the club takes part in North London Area Events, including tournaments, grading exams, and Randori sessions. These events provide opportunities for members to showcase their skills, engage in friendly competition, and further develop their Judo abilities.
