Battery Hill climbing area, also known as The Pines, is a popular rock climbing spot located in Urbenville, New South Wales. Nestled in the beautiful Northern Rivers region of Australia, this climbing area offers a range of routes suitable for climbers of all skill levels.
The rock at Battery Hill is composed of igneous trachyte, characterised by sharp edges and pockets. While most of the rock is solid, there may still be some areas of dodgy rock, so climbers are advised to exercise caution. The climbing routes primarily consist of less than vertical sections, with steeper sections and bulges to add interest and challenge. Many routes feature small crystals and crimps, putting climbers' faith in their sticky rubber shoes to the test.
The friction quality of the rock is generally good, except in lichen areas when damp.
Climbers can expect to find a few pieces of natural protection, along with quickdraws and bolt plates, as the necessary equipment for climbing routes at Battery Hill. The protection is usually well-placed and more than adequate, although bolts may be painted to blend in with the rock, so climbers are advised to look closely. The routes are listed from right to left, and there are several beginner-friendly leads that are great for building confidence and skills.
Battery Hill features two separate climbing faces, with a distance of approximately 100 metres between them. All climbs from 'Flat and Useless' are located on the second face. Climbers are encouraged to have fun exploring the various routes and challenges this climbing area has to offer.
Please note that the overall topography of the area is approximate and may not include all the routes. Visitors are encouraged to update the topo as necessary if they have more accurate information.
Access to Battery Hill and other nearby areas, such as The Crown and Spot X, no longer requires permission from the landowner. This change was confirmed after discussions with the owners of the general store in Urbenville. Climbers are reminded to close the gate on their way up to the treatment plant, as there may be cattle roaming the field.
The starting point for reaching Battery Hill is the campsite at Tooloom Falls. However, it should be noted that as of 2023, the campsite has been closed and the bridge crossing the stream from the Pines campsite has been washed out. To reach the cliff, climbers can walk from the campsite, crossing the waterfall (if possible and if the water is not too high), and then following Beehive Road for 1. 5 kilometres before turning left onto Wood Duck Road.
This road leads directly to the base of the cliff. It is advisable to follow the provided directions instead of relying on GPS, as Google Maps may suggest non-existent roads in the area.
Battery Hill is predominantly composed of trachyte, making it a suitable crag for rappelling. The area is well-established and offers a range of climbing experiences for all types of climbers. Visitors are advised to plan their trip ahead, check the weather conditions, and find suitable accommodation in the surrounding area. Guidebooks are available for reference, and climbers can contribute by adding routes and topos to enhance the overall climbing experience at Battery Hill.
