Barn Elms Boathouse, perched right on the River Thames in Southwest London, is your go-to spot for rowing, whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out. Founded back in 1967, they’ve been all about the sport for over 50 years. And yep, they're part of the famous Oxford vs. Cambridge Boat Race scene.
Organised by Sam, who’s all about making rowing accessible, Barn Elms Boathouse is perfect for anyone aged 11 and up. You don't need a membership to start; just drop in and join the "Learn to Row" course. Sam's team of experienced coaches will get you started and hooked on rowing in no time.
If you're already an experienced rower and just want to hit the water, there's a recreational membership for adults at just £34 a month. You get to take out a boat anytime during the day—just make sure you’ve passed the Tideway navigation test and got the nod from a coach.
For juniors, the boathouse runs special courses designed for kids who’ll be 12 by the end of August 2024. They even work with schools to create safe and fun rowing programmes.
You can find Barn Elms Boathouse at the Barn Elms Sports Centre on Queen Elizabeth Walk in Barnes. It’s easy to get there from both Barnes and Putney sides of the river, with parking available, although watch out for tidal flooding along the Putney Embankment.
Public transport is a breeze too, with bus stops at Festing Road, The Wetlands Centre, and Church Road/Red Lion. Plus, it's a 20-minute walk from either Barnes or Putney overground stations and Putney Bridge Tube station.
Stay in the know by following Barn Elms Boathouse on social media and joining their mailing list. Check out their FAQ section on the website for any questions you might have.
Sam and the team at Barn Elms Boathouse welcome everyone to come and experience the thrill of rowing right in the heart of London.
