Browning approached representatives of the Bally Haly Estate with a view to obtaining land for the construction of a new golf course. An agreement was reached with William Halys grandson Philip. This allowed for the construction of what was to be an 18-hole course located on the northeast bank of Quidi Vidi Lake. The course was officially opened in 1914 and was built using methods similar to those employed in Scotland on the designs of the old course architects.
The Bally Haly course was patterned after those in the home of golf and each hole was named in honour of a famous St. Johns golfer.
