While known for its expertise in Pole Vault, the club also boasts a busy calendar filled with cross-country races that provide a challenging and rewarding experience for participants.
One of the standout races on the Ballarat Regional Centre Cross Country calendar is the Steve Moneghetti Lap of the Lake. Held around the picturesque Lake Wendouree, this 6 km lap serves as the perfect opportunity for athletes to test their endurance and speed. It's worth noting that this race is particularly special, as it holds the lap record set by none other than Steve Moneghetti himself back in 1992.
YCW Harriers also takes pride in hosting the Ern Dowling handicap race, an annual tradition dating all the way back to 1946. Named after club legend Ern Dowling, this race promises to deliver an exhilarating experience for participants, showcasing the rich history and heritage of the club.
Another noteworthy event organised by YCW Harriers is the Club 8 km Championship at St Georges Lake, Creswick. This race, known for its challenging and hilly course, takes participants on a thrilling 8 km journey approximately 16 km from Ballarat. After conquering the demanding 2 km climb, athletes can look forward to a delightful post-race afternoon tea that makes the effort all the more worthwhile.
The Tom Conroy 8 km Handicap is yet another highlight on YCW Harriers' event calendar. Named in honour of Tom Conroy, this premier handicap race takes participants through the scenic Scarsdale Forest, starting from Scarsdale Primary School. Following the race, participants are invited to savor a delicious club BBQ while sharing their memorable stories and experiences.
The Club 3 km Championship is an event of utmost prestige for YCW Harriers. Serving as the selection race for the Daylesford Relay team since 1948, this race commences at the Botanical Gardens and follows a clockwise route around Lake Wendouree, often benefiting from a favourable tailwind. The sealing of the handicap category in 2015 introduced The Michael Hayes 3 km CC Handicap trophy, named after the club's esteemed handicapper, adding an extra layer of excitement and competition to the event.
Last but certainly not least, YCW Harriers presents the exhilarating King of the Mountain race. With a rich history dating back to 1969, this race allows club members to vie for the prestigious titles of King and Queen of the Mountain. Spanning a challenging 4.3 km route from the foot to the summit of Mt. Buninyong, this race promises a grueling yet rewarding experience characterised by demanding terrain and a notable absence of flat sections.
