Swing Out Central in Mt Eden, a Contemporary Dance club based in Auckland, is excited to announce our upcoming Balboa Intermediate Class! Priced at $80.00, this class is perfect for those who are comfortable with pure bal basics and are regularly social dancing.
Balboa is a dance style that focuses on connection and flow, allowing you to experience the joy of dancing in a smooth and graceful partnership. This class will build upon your existing knowledge of bal basics, in-and-outs, come-arounds, throw-outs, and lollies, taking your skills to the next level.
Located in Mt Eden, our Balboa Intermediate Class takes place every Monday. Whether you are new to swing dancing or have been dancing for a few months, this class is open to everyone. We will work on various footwork techniques and learn new moves that you can confidently showcase on the dance floor.
Did you know that Balboa was originally popularised in the dance halls of the Balboa Peninsula, California in the 1930s? It almost faded into obscurity, but thanks to passionate dancers, it has been preserved for future generations to enjoy. Balboa can be danced to a wide range of tempos, including fast-paced music with over 300 beats per minute. It's an exhilarating experience!
Designed to be danced in a small space, Balboa involves chaining together two-step movements while shuffling your feet. In its early days, Balboa emerged as a response to overcrowded ballrooms where the swing-out or breakaway moves were challenging or even prohibited by venues.
Modern Balboa dancers often distinguish between two types of Balboa - “Pure Balboa” and “Bal-Swing.” In Pure Balboa, partners stay in a close embrace throughout the dance, focusing on footwork variations, couple turns, and synchronised movements. Bal-Swing, on the other hand, incorporates more dynamic and open movements with spacing between partners.
