Balboa is a cruisy and classy dance style that became popular in the dance halls of the Balboa Peninsula, California in the 1930s.
Although it was almost lost, passionate dancers dedicated themselves to preserving Balboa, allowing us to enjoy it for years to come. Balboa can be danced to a wide variety of tempos, including fast music with over 300 beats per minute, which adds excitement to the dance. The basic step of Balboa takes up a small space, making it ideal for crowded ballrooms. It was originally created as a response to the difficulties in performing the swing-out or breakaway move due to the limited space.
Modern Balboa dancers sometimes differentiate between two styles: Pure Balboa and Bal-Swing. In Pure Balboa, dancers remain in close embrace throughout the dance, focusing on footwork variations, turning, and moving as a couple. Bal-Swing incorporates more dynamic and open movements, allowing for increased space between partners.
