Backwell Judo Club is a well-established martial arts club based in Backwell, New Zealand. Founded in 1989, the club has been a staple in the community for over three decades. Since 1996, it has been located at the Backwell Playing Fields, providing a convenient and spacious venue for training.
The club offers a comprehensive range of classes, catering to individuals of all ages and skill levels. With six classes a week, held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, there's something for everyone. From children as young as four to adults, Backwell Judo Club welcomes students from diverse backgrounds.
Backwell Judo Club follows the teachings of the late Kenshiro Abbe Sensei, specifically in the style of Kyushindo Judo. The instructors prioritise a holistic approach to judo, encouraging students to participate in various elements of the martial art. This includes break-falling techniques (ukemi), throwing techniques (nage-waza), groundwork (katame-waza), competition, teaching, and kata (pre-arranged forms).
The club's class schedule includes primary judo for children aged 4-8 from 6:00 – 6:45 pm, secondary judo for ages 8-13 from 7:00 – 7:45 pm, and senior judo for ages 13 and above from 8:00 – 9:00 pm on Tuesday evenings.
Backwell Judo Club is governed by six core principles that guide its training and philosophy. These principles are respect, self-discipline, etiquette, confidence, safety, and leadership. By embedding these values within their teachings, the club aims to cultivate not only physical strength but also mental fortitude and character development.
The club is fortunate to have a dedicated and talented team of instructors, led by Sensei Trudi Marshall. Sensei Trudi, who obtained her 3rd Dan Black Belt in May 2017, is the longest-standing member of the club. She teaches the primary classes on both Tuesdays and Thursdays, ensuring that the younger members receive expert guidance.
Sensei Iain Bell, who has been practising judo since 2003 and was awarded his 3rd Dan Black Belt in May 2017, leads the secondary class on Tuesdays. His experience combined with his background as an outdoor activities instructor brings a unique perspective to his teaching.
Other instructors include Sensei Josh Weavers, the youngest member of the club to receive a 3rd Dan Black Belt, and Sensei James Harrison, who boasts a 2nd Dan Black Belt as well as training in Jiu-Jitsu. Together with Sensei Will Marshall and Sensei Jake Fysh, who both hold 1st Dan Black Belts, the team is committed to helping students achieve their full potential.
