Ruby Trew
Ruby Trew (AU)
Biography
Ruby Trew's journey began remarkably early, with her first experience on a surfboard at just six months old, thanks to her father Simon's adventurous spirit. Emigrating from Wales to Sydney’s northern beaches in 1999, Simon sparked Ruby’s dual passion for surfing and skateboarding. By the age of five, Ruby was already hooked on skateboarding, which quickly became a significant part of her life alongside surfing. From entering local grom contests to competing internationally by the age of ten, Ruby’s dedication to both sports has been relentless.
Her versatility and prowess are evident from her impressive list of achievements. In surfing, she clinched the NSW under-12 state champion title and won the Oz Grom competition for under-12 girls. Not one to be confined to a single sport, Ruby also secured a silver medal in the women’s vert contest at the World Championships in Barcelona in 2019, a remarkable feat for such a young talent.
Despite her love for surfing, Ruby's focus has recently been on skateboarding. Her commitment paid off at the 2022 Park Skateboarding World Championships, where she narrowly missed the finals by finishing 10th. Determined to excel, Ruby bounced back in 2023 to win silver at the World Skateboarding Pro Tour event in San Juan, Argentina, where she competed against 179 skateboarders for a coveted spot at the Paris Olympics.
The Tokyo Olympics were a missed opportunity due to unforeseen circumstances, but Ruby’s resilience and determination have not wavered. Now, she is gearing up for the Paris 2024 Olympics, dedicating up to 40 hours a week to training, which includes an intense regimen of surfing, skateboarding, and gym sessions. Her day often starts before dawn, juggling her demanding training schedule with her school commitments at Narrabeen Sports High School.
Ruby’s aspirations extend beyond Paris; she aims to represent Australia in surfing at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Her advice to her younger self encapsulates her journey and outlook perfectly: “Enjoy the journey along the way. Remember why you’re doing it, why you love it, and who you’re doing it for.”
