Biography

Matthew Denny hails from the quaint town of Allora in Queensland, Australia, where the expansive spaces allowed his natural talent for throwing to thrive. As a child, he juggled between playing rugby league and throwing bean bags and vortexes, eventually narrowing his focus to athletics in his teens. Remarkably, his family even set up a makeshift discus circle on their rural property, which remains part of his training regimen to this day.

Matthew emerged as a stellar talent, dominating junior events and breaking multiple records with the QE2 Track Club. His international success began early, clinching the World Youth (U18) Championships discus title in 2013. He continued to impress, placing fourth at the World Junior (U20) Championships in 2014 and securing a silver medal at the 2015 Universiade.

2016 was a landmark year for Matt. He won both the national discus and hammer titles, becoming the second athlete in nearly a century to achieve this double. His determination saw him make multiple trips to the U.S. in pursuit of an Olympic spot, which he achieved with a throw that ranked fifth on Australia's all-time list. At the Rio 2016 Olympics, he marked a commendable 61.16m in the qualifying round.

Matt's journey continued upward with changes in training that enhanced his speed and athleticism. His versatility shone through at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where he competed in both disciplines within a tight schedule, bagging gold in the discus and silver in the hammer throw.

Focusing solely on discus by 2019, Matt saw consistent performance, winning the World University Games and finishing sixth at the World Championships. Despite setbacks in 2020 due to injury and the pandemic, he rebounded in the following season, qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics where he set a new personal best and finished just shy of a medal.

The years since Tokyo have seen Matt solidify his position as one of the world's elite discus throwers. He clinched gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and continually broke national records. His switch to coach Dale Stevenson in 2023 brought further success, including a victory at the Diamond League final in Eugene and yet another Australian record.
