Lauretta Hanson
Lauretta Hanson (AU)
Biography
Lauretta Hanson may not be the most high-profile member of the Australian cycling squad, but she is undeniably one of the most crucial. A stalwart of the UCI Women's WorldTeam Lidl-Trek, Lauretta has built her reputation as a formidable domestique — a rider dedicated to supporting her teammates, ensuring their victory often at the expense of her personal glory.
Her role has drawn praise from high-profile Lidl-Trek rider Ellen van Dijk, who credits much of her success to Lauretta's unwavering support. Ellen stated, “Lauretta is incredibly valuable. She's always exactly where she needs to be, performing at the highest level. It’s a choice she made to support others, and it’s been fantastic for the team.”
Growing up on a farm near Fern Hill, Victoria, Lauretta’s love for cycling began early, inspired by her mother, an elite cyclist in the 1970s and '80s. She joined her first cycling club at the age of eight and has never looked back since.
Lauretta's journey took her from a scholarship in Tennessee to professional racing across the United States and Canada. In 2019, she made the leap to Europe, joining Trek-Segafredo, where she continued to excel in her role. Highlighting her versatility and dedication, Lauretta played a pivotal part in the Australian team at the 2023 World Championships in Glasgow, battling tough conditions to secure a strong finish. Her efforts in team events, such as the mixed relay time trial, underline her commitment and team spirit.
Despite focusing largely on support roles, Lauretta has shown flashes of individual brilliance. In 2024, she achieved second place in the road race at the Australian Road Championships — the same event her mother won decades earlier — and captured a podium spot at the Geelong Classic criterium.
Beyond the bike, Lauretta has also completed a bachelor’s degree in Business, Sports, and Fitness Administration/Management from Deakin University. Her story is a testament to the importance of teamwork, dedication, and the joy found in helping others succeed.
