Biography
Clare Hunt's rise in 2023 was nothing short of extraordinary. At the start of the year, she was a dedicated player in Australia’s A-League Women, but she hadn't yet made her debut for the Matildas. By September, Clare was not only the starting centre-back for the national team but also embarking on a new adventure with Paris Saint-Germain. Remarkably, she played a pivotal role in the Matildas’ run to the semi-finals of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, showcasing her skill and composure across seven crucial matches.
The journey to this point wasn't easy for Clare. In her early career, she endured numerous injuries, including an ACL, a shoulder reconstruction, and a broken ankle, which led to seven surgeries over five years. These setbacks tested her resilience, but Clare's determination never wavered. Growing up on a sheep farm near Grenfell, NSW, she honed her skills at the Canberra United Academy, eventually playing for their senior team.
Her unwavering dedication paid off in the 2022-23 season, where she was recognized for her outstanding performances and earned a spot in the PFA A-Leagues Team of the Season. This recognition opened the door to her selection for the Matildas in the Cup of Nations. Clare's impressive debut in February 2023 against the Czech Republic marked the beginning of her international career, and by the World Cup, she had become one of the first players on the team sheet.
Clare's outstanding performances in the World Cup led to her inclusion in the tournament’s All-Star XI. Post-World Cup, she solidified her place in PSG's squad, a team full of French internationals.
