Biography
Angela Yu is set to carry on a rich family legacy as she prepares to represent Australia in badminton at the Paris 2024 Olympics. With her mother, He Tian (Rosie) Tang, holding a history of winning Olympic bronze for China and a Commonwealth bronze for Australia, and her father, Yu Qi, also having a strong badminton background, Angela was practically born to play badminton.
Starting under the guidance of her parents, Angela quickly developed her skills and passion for the sport. She was part of the Badminton Australia Junior National Squad, competing at the World Junior Championships in 2018 and 2019. Her talent and dedication saw her and Mitchell Wheeler secure bronze in mixed doubles at the 2022 Oceania Championships.
Angela's dedication paid off even more when she and her brother Jack debuted at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Angela impressed by reaching the round of 16 in both women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The following year, Angela and her partner Setyana Mapasa captured the badminton world’s attention by winning three back-to-back tournaments, including the prestigious Kaoshiung Masters 100 in Taiwan.
Currently ranked 11th in the world, Angela and Setyana continued their winning streak by clinching gold at the Oceania Championships in Geelong in February 2024 and making it to the round of 16 at the All England Open. Angela’s journey is a testament to her hard work and the nurturing environment provided by her family, establishing her as a promising star in the world of badminton.
