The Atado Ju Jitsu Club Oxford, also known as Oxford Ju Jitsu, is a versatile self-defence school located in Oxford, New Zealand. The club offers training in Ju Jitsu and incorporates a wide selection of different martial arts skills, making it a comprehensive self-defence system.
The roots of Atado Ju Jitsu in Oxford can be traced back to the “Far Eastern Club” (Atado White Tiger Style), which originated from Kung Fu. Grand Master Edward Leong Lee Fu developed this martial art system for western servicemen stationed in the far east after World War 2. In 1968, the Oxford martial art club was founded by the late Ernie DANKS, who studied under the Grand Master. Currently, the senior Oxford club instructor is David Rogers, a 4th Degree Black Belt, and the club is a member of the English Ju Jitsu Federation.
ATADO Ju Jitsu incorporates various techniques from different martial arts disciplines such as Judo, Karate, Aikido, Kickboxing, Escrima, Wing Chun, Iaido, and others. The system also teaches defences against a wide range of weapons. With this comprehensive approach, ATADO focuses on street survival and self-defence skills right from the start. Beginners will learn useful techniques from their first day of training, and those with the right aptitude can quickly build knowledge and ability.
The ATADO Ju Jitsu Club Oxford follows the motto “NUNQUAM OPPUGNATOR,” which translates to “Never the Aggressor. ” The training sessions begin with a warm-up session aimed at relaxing the muscles and preventing strains. This warm-up may include various movements around the mat, press-ups, sit-ups, rotation exercises, and limb stretching. The intensity of the warm-up is adjusted based on each trainee's level, allowing their fitness to progressively improve.
Trainees will learn techniques to avoid confrontation, break the balance of an attacker, restrain them, and disarm them, whether standing or on the ground.
Beginners are welcome to join the club on Wednesday evenings, and as they progress through the qualifying belts, they can also attend training on Monday evenings. For initial training, participants can wear a T-shirt and comfortable trousers. Each two-hour session on Wednesday costs 8, and trainees pay for each session attended without any monthly fees (pay as you go). Additionally, the club offers an introductory deal membership that allows participants to try out the training for a few weeks before becoming a member.
Once trainees become members, they will need to provide their own plain white T-shirt, white martial arts trousers (which can be purchased from the club or sourced independently), and pay a joining fee of 25 for registration, licence, and insurance in the first year, and 20 for annual renewal.
Grading in ATADO Ju Jitsu begins with an unmarked white belt. After demonstrating competence over a few weeks, trainees are awarded a Red Tab. Formal gradings, presided over by a black belt instructor, follow, with trainees progressing through successive colour belts. The club provides all belts free of charge.
The first white belt grading adds additional techniques to the trainee's repertoire and showcases their progress in the martial arts style.
Atado Ju Jitsu Club Oxford is committed to providing comprehensive self-defence training, empowering individuals to protect themselves in real-life situations. Whether you are a beginner starting your martial arts journey or an experienced practitioner looking to expand your skills, Atado Ju Jitsu Club Oxford offers a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
