Aston Aikido at the Lighthouse is a well-established martial arts club located in Birmingham, UK. The club is part of the Aikido Academy UK, an association that focuses on promoting the art of Aikido in the central and northern areas of Birmingham.
Aikido is a martial art that originated from the movements of Kenjutsu (Japanese sword arts) and the joint locks and throws of Jiu Jitsu. Unlike other martial arts, such as Karate or Judo, Aikido does not involve competitions. Instead, students take turns initiating and defending techniques, allowing each student to learn both sides of the practise.
The primary goal of Aston Aikido at the Lighthouse is to provide its members with a friendly and supportive environment to learn and practise Aikido. The club believes in developing core strength, balance, and self-confidence through the art. In addition, Aikido teaches practical self-defence techniques that seek resolution to conflict without resorting to violence.
Prospective students are welcome to observe a class before deciding to join. When attending a class, it is best to arrive prior to the start time and introduce oneself to one of the instructors. No uniform is required, and participants are encouraged to wear loose-fitting clothing, such as a tracksuit and t-shirt. Previous martial arts experience is not necessary, making it accessible to people of all skill levels.
At Aston Aikido at the Lighthouse, a team of experienced instructors guide students through their Aikido journey. Sensei Mark Peckett, the chief instructor, brings over 30 years of experience and has trained under various renowned Aikido masters. Sensei Qaisar Najib and Sensei Munir Iqbal, both accomplished martial artists, have found their home in Aikido and continue to expand their knowledge and skills through various influences in the field.
Aston Aikido at the Lighthouse offers classes for adults at the Young People's Centre, as well as children's classes at the Doug Ellis Sports Centre. The club is dedicated to providing a safe and inclusive space for individuals of all ages to learn and grow in the art of Aikido.
