Are you the owner of Aspire - Naginata Dojo?

Charlotte Vandersleyen wants to share a message to the sports community about Aspire - Naginata Dojo in London. It’s a great place for people of all ages and genders to practise Naginata, a Japanese martial art. At the dojo, members use wooden spears to perform kata (predefined techniques) or engage in sparring. This weapon was originally used by Samurai in the Middle Ages for its reach advantage. Though it became obsolete with the advent of firearms, Naginata was reintroduced after World War II as a safer sport.
Charlotte, a fifth dan, began her journey with Naginata at the age of 13 back in 1995. She’s been part of the Belgian National Team since 1999 and has taken part in international competitions. She’s also played a key role in promoting Naginata in Germany and Italy before starting her own dojo in Belgium.
Simon Bruins, a third dan, got into Naginata while studying in Utrecht. He has represented the Dutch National Team in international tournaments, co-founded a Naginata club in Canada, and eventually joined Aspire in London.
Everyone at Aspire - Naginata Dojo gets involved in footwork, kata, and sparring. The club ensures all members engage in every aspect, which helps in a holistic learning approach. The dojo runs a traditional structure to maintain safe and effective training. While the dojo does encourage competition, the main focus remains on practising kihon (basics) and proper techniques, which are essential for advanced skills.
Members are encouraged to progress at their own pace and receive personalised guidance. The class routine varies throughout the year to match the students' levels and to prepare for events like gradings, competitions, and seminars.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, Charlotte and Simon have been hosting online practises featuring different guest speakers each week. It’s a great way to stay active and connected with the international Naginata community. These live sessions happen every Wednesday at 7pm (London time) on Zoom, with recordings available for those who can't make it.
Aspire - Naginata Dojo welcomes both beginners and experienced practitioners, providing a supportive space to learn Naginata and embrace traditional Japanese values. Charlotte and Simon look forward to seeing new faces join their dojo in London.
