Ashley Cupitt Boxing Academy, known formerly as Yungaburra Boxing Gym and Atherton Amateur Boxing Club, is a local boxing academy in Atherton, Queensland, Australia. With a rich history dating back to 1978, this academy has been operated by dedicated volunteers who offer traditional boxing training to individuals of all ages, abilities, genders, and races. They prioritise natural body movement and helping participants break a sweat through skipping, fitness circuits, and technique drills. It's worth noting that the academy does not possess air conditioning or weight machines, which adds to its old-school charm.
Throughout the week, the academy hosts a range of classes and activities suited to different preferences. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, they offer boxing classes for parents and babies, adults, and children aged 5 to 12. These classes focus on developing boxing skills and are available exclusively to members. Each class has a maximum capacity of 5 individuals, ensuring personalised attention for everyone. On Saturdays, they also offer a Dance Workout class, creating an opportunity for participants to enjoy a structured dance session while wearing whatever they feel most comfortable in. However, it's important to note that the availability of the Dance Workout class may vary depending on whether they are participating in a tournament. Additionally, Muay Thai classes are available on Mondays and Fridays, which include skipping, fitness exercises, and Muay Thai technique training. Please bear in mind that the academy does not hold classes on public holidays, and the schedule for school holidays can be found on their Facebook page.
Membership fees at the academy are determined by age groups. For those who attend casually without membership, the cost is $20 per class, and the completion of necessary forms is required. Children between the ages of 5 and 14 can avail a yearly membership priced at $30, which includes a discounted rate of $2 per class. Teenagers and adults have the option of a yearly membership priced at $70, with a discounted rate of $5 per class. The academy also offers personal training sessions at a competitive price of $80 per hour for members and $90 per hour for non-members. The membership fees contribute towards insurance, rent, equipment replacement, and administrative costs. Various discounts are available, such as a Two Person Membership Fee priced at $110, a Yearly Family Membership Fee at $200 (including 2 adults and 3 children), and a Prepaid Class Card for Members, which includes options for children ($35, with 2.5 free classes) and teenagers/adults ($90, with 2 free classes). Payment methods accepted include cash, direct debit, and EFTPOS, and membership duration runs from January to December each year. Rest assured that there are no lock-in contracts involved.
Looking to the future, Ashley Cupitt Boxing Academy has exciting plans in store. They aim to broaden their offerings by including multiple fight disciplines and establishing a Rehabilitation Centre for Brain Injuries, Sports Injuries, and Veterans on the Atherton Tablelands. The founders, Ashley and Louise, share a deep passion for assisting others, as they have personally experienced traumatic brain injuries and sporting injuries. Louise is currently a Peer Leader for her local brain injury group's STEPS Program, which forms part of Qld Health's Acquired Brain Injury Outreach Service (ABIOS). In order to make their dreams a reality, the academy plans to launch fundraising initiatives and warmly welcomes donations. If you wish to contribute, kindly provide your donations directly to Ashley or Louise, as they are the only authorised individuals responsible for collecting donations or organising raffles on behalf of the academy.
