Aquanauts Swim School is a renowned swimming school in New Zealand that offers high-quality swimming lessons for children aged 4 and above. With a focus on creating a fun, friendly, and safe environment, Aquanauts Swim School ensures that children can learn to swim with confidence.
The classes at Aquanauts Swim School are intentionally kept small to provide a personalised learning experience for each child. All classes are led by fully qualified ASA Teachers who have undergone comprehensive DBS checks, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all students. From beginners to advanced levels, Aquanauts Swim School caters to students of all swimming abilities.
Founded by Ben Westlake, a qualified ASA Teacher, and managed by Nicky Westlake, a qualified teaching assistant, Aquanauts Swim School is affiliated with Swim England. This affiliation guarantees a good level of instruction from caring teachers who can effectively teach even the most nervous pupils how to swim. The school prides itself on having a passionate team of instructors who love both teaching and swimming.
Lessons at Aquanauts Swim School are structured and progressive, allowing children to develop their skills and confidence in a step-by-step manner. Beginners are taught in small groups with a ratio of 3 children to 1 adult. They learn fundamental skills such as putting their face in the water, while gradually building their confidence. Most beginners will start with the Duckling Awards and progress to the Water Skills programme as they develop.
Intermediate students continue to be taught in small groups with a ratio of 3 children to 1 adult. At this level, children are capable of swimming independently on their front and back for a width. They learn stroke techniques, breathing techniques, and continue to build their confidence in the water.
Advanced students are taught in slightly larger groups by a teacher from the poolside. They focus on improving their stroke techniques, breathing, and stamina. At this stage, they work towards achieving higher stages of the Water Skills Framework.
The Lengths class is designed for children who have mastered their stroke techniques and stamina. They swim continuous lengths with breaks when instruction is given. These students work towards completing distance awards and swimming challenge awards. They are also provided the opportunity to develop Rookie lifeguard skills.
The Lengths + Rookie class is for advanced students who are interested in enhancing their swimming skills with lifesaving techniques and personal survival training. This class involves swimming in clothes without goggles, focusing on water fitness, treading water, towing, and underwater swimming. It prepares students for outdoor rescues and survival scenarios. Completion of this class leads to the achievement of bronze, silver, and gold level awards.
Aquanauts Swim School strives to empower children in their swimming journey and encourages them to pursue further qualifications. It is interesting to note that children aged 16 and above have the opportunity to take the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification. Additionally, children aged 15 can study for the Level 1 Swim Teachers Certification and qualify once they turn 16.
