The history of Andrew Petrie Oval dates back to 1923 when the Council acquired an area of approximately 32. 5 acres (13. 2 hectares) from a 'Rose Bay Freehold Company'. The site was previously occupied by Chinese market gardeners, who were asked to leave to make way for the construction of the oval.
Over the years, the oval has seen the addition of a pavilion named after George Grimley in 1927, a golf course by 1931, and two croquet lawns in 1934. The Rose Bay Rugby Football Club also has its club rooms on the premises.
To ensure the proper use and management of the oval, specific conditions and regulations are in place. Prohibited items on the synthetic field include animals, chewing gum, glass or sharp objects, bikes, skateboards, rollerblades, or other wheeled objects, vehicles (except for Council maintenance vehicles), alcohol, food, or drinks other than water, BBQs/fires, pegs and stakes, smoking, tables and chairs, heavy items, and unauthorised commercial services and activities. The recommended footwear for the field is moulded studs and plastic screw-ins, while steel studs or cleats are prohibited.
Visitors and users of Andrew Petrie Oval must adhere to the conditions of use and follow the directions of Council staff at all times. Council reserves the right to book the field, and bookings always take precedence over public use. Members of the public must vacate the field during booked activities, and groups or individuals conducting organised activities are required to make a booking. Any damage observed must be reported to Council, and the oval should not be used when signposted as closed for maintenance and cleaning.
