Andersons trail is a challenging cycling route located in the picturesque Blue Mountains National Park, specifically between Wentworth Falls and Woodford. This trail is designed for experienced mountain bike riders who are seeking an adrenaline-filled adventure. Spanning a distance of 28 km one-way, it is recommended to allocate 3–5 hours to complete the trail.
The trail is graded as hard, meaning it is only suitable for well-prepared and extremely fit riders who have prior experience. Riders are advised to bring essentials such as drinking water, snacks, a first aid kit, helmet, bike repair kit, hat, sunscreen, personal locator beacon, and suitable clothing.
Starting from the Old Queen Victoria Hospital on Kings Tableland Road, riders will follow the unsealed road towards McMahons Point for 7 km before turning left onto Andersons fire trail at the gate. The trail spans 12 km, taking riders through steep gullies and open eucalypt forests atop the escarpment. As riders cycle, they can enjoy the delightful aroma of peppermint gums and keep an eye out for native wildlife such as echidnas or swamp wallabies.
At the end of the Andersons fire trail, riders will turn right onto Bedford Creek trail and cross the creek. This is an ideal spot to refuel or cool down before embarking on the major uphill climb towards Woodford Station, approximately 9 km away. Alternatively, riders can turn left onto Bedford Creek trail before the creek crossing and return uphill to the hospital via Ingar Road for a 32 km loop.
For those who are well-prepared and seeking an overnight adventure, the ride can be combined with a stay at Murphys Glen campground. Additionally, for those with the energy and endurance for an extended ride, Andersons Trail can be linked up with the Woodford-Oaks trail, adding a 25 km and a challenging final climb to Glenbrook Station.
Andersons trail offers a virtual tour captured with Google Street View Trekker, allowing riders to explore and plan their adventure beforehand. Safety and practical information, as well as visitor information, can be found online.
This trail is managed as part of the Bush Trackers conservation programme, which aims to educate children about the natural and cultural splendour of the greater Blue Mountains World Heritage area. Through education initiatives and bushwalks, Bush Trackers encourages children to engage with the environment and appreciate the beauty of nature.
