Archery is derived from the Latin word “arcus,” which means bow. Archery is one of the oldest arts and sports in the world, dating back thousands of years. It has been used for hunting, warfare, and as a recreational activity. The Anchor Bowmen Archery Club, located in Barnetby, is a thriving community of archers passionate about the sport.
Established over 50 years ago, the Anchor Bowmen Archery Club has a rich history dating back to 1963. Originally starting at Swarkestone, near the River Trent, the club's name was inspired by the nearby Anchor Cave and the Anchor Church at Swarkestone Bridge. Over the years, the club has moved to various locations, including Elvaston Castle, British Rail, Alvaston and Boulton Cricket Ground, Derby Rugby Club, and Spondon Sports and Leisure Centre. Since 1995, the club has found its home at the Asterdale Sportsgrounds on Borrowash Road in Spondon, Derby.
The club welcomes archers of all ages and skill levels, from 8 to 80 years old. They encourage every discipline of bow style, including recurve, compound, longbow, and barebow. The Anchor Bowmen Archery Club is affiliated with Archery GB (Grand National Archery Society, GNAS), East Midlands Archery Society (EMAS), and Derbyshire County Archery Association (DCAA), following the guidelines set by Archery GB.
The club is run by a dedicated committee, which is elected annually by its members at the Annual General Meeting. The committee oversees the day-to-day operations and ensures the club's smooth functioning. They organise tournaments, manage equipment, record scores, handle membership, and coordinate various events and social activities for the club members.
For those interested in exploring the world of archery, the Anchor Bowmen Archery Club offers opportunities to have a go and experience target archery firsthand. They organise “have a go” sessions and taster sessions throughout the year, providing a fun and relaxed atmosphere for beginners to try their hand at archery. If you are considering becoming a club member or simply want to find out more, feel free to get in touch with the club either by phone or through their contact page.
The Anchor Bowmen Archery Club is passionate about promoting the sport of archery and fostering a sense of community among its members. Their website serves as an essential resource for both club members and the public, providing information about the club, upcoming tournaments, news updates, photo galleries, and a comprehensive glossary of archery terms.
