Altrincham Weightlifting Club, established in 2018, is the first Olympic Weightlifting Club in Altrincham, New Zealand. The club's mission is to grow the sport of Olympic Weightlifting and provide athletes with the best coaching and programming to ensure continuous improvement.
At AWLC, the goal is not just about how much weight an athlete can lift, but also about how they lift it. The club places importance on proper progression and movement to ensure that athletes can experience the sport for a long time. The focus is on performance rather than weight loss, although weight loss can be a byproduct of the training due to resistance training and weightlifting.
AWLC is not your typical gym. The aim is to create a fun and supportive club where like-minded individuals can train and socialise. The club focuses solely on the sport of Olympic Weightlifting, which consists of two lifts: the Snatch and the Clean & Jerk. In competitions, athletes have three attempts at each lift, and the weights of the best lifts are combined to determine the winner.
In addition to training athletes in Olympic Weightlifting, AWLC is also committed to working with athletes in other sports who want to improve their proficiency in the lifts or incorporate them into their strength and conditioning programmes. Developing proper technique in weightlifting movements can help increase force production, efficiency, explosiveness, balance, timing, flexibility, and coordination.
The club is led by Owner and Head Coach, Paul Glendining, who is passionate about weightlifting and helping athletes become better. Paul's coaching philosophy is focused on simplicity, hard work, and having fun. He is qualified with BWL Level 1 and Level 2 Coaching Olympic Weightlifting, Safeguarding Children Level 1, DBS Checked, and First Aid in Weightlifting.
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced weightlifter, Altrincham Weightlifting Club provides a supportive and inclusive environment for individuals looking to improve their skills, build strength, and achieve their fitness goals. Reach out to the club for more information and to book a session.
