About
The Algoma Kendo Club (AKC) located in Sault Ste. Marie offers traditional Japanese sword-based martial arts training in the form of Kendo. Kendo is both a martial art and a modern sport, similar to modern fencing, where participants score points against each other using bamboo swords and protective armor.
As a small and close-knit club, AKC is always welcoming new members who are interested in learning the art of Kendo. The club is currently operating out of the George Leach Centre, with limited class availability due to COVID-19 restrictions. All safety measures, including vaccines, masks, and physical distancing, are strictly enforced to ensure the well-being of all participants.
The 2019-2020 Kendo year is in full swing at AKC, with new students welcome to join classes on Mondays in the GLC multi-purpose room. The club offers competitive pricing and has exciting events planned for the year, including visits from experienced Senseis and potential team Canada prospects. Grading opportunities in Toronto and in-club tournaments are also on the agenda for the coming months.
For those over 16 years old who are interested in joining the Algoma Kendo Club, the club provides all the necessary information on their website. From class schedules to special events, all the details can be found online. Prospective members can contact the club directly for more information and to get started on their Kendo journey.
