Aikido UK – Barrhead is a non-profit organisation based in Glasgow, dedicated to teaching the Japanese martial art of Aikido. The school was founded in May 2000 by Sensei William Andrew, who was the President and Technical Director of Aikido UK until his passing in 2011. The current President and Technical Director is Sensei Edward Dunne, who took over the position in 2011.
At Aikido UK – Barrhead, the aim is to enable members to cultivate and develop the coordination of mind and body using the principles of ki. The school firmly believes that individuals of all ages and abilities can experience a wide variety of benefits through the study of Aikido and ki development.
Aikido UK – Barrhead offers a number of classes in and around the Glasgow area, with training available almost every day of the week. Beginners are always welcome to join in, and the instructors create a supportive and inclusive environment for all students.
In addition to regular classes, Aikido UK – Barrhead also organises events and seminars throughout the year to further enrich the experience for its members.
Sensei William Andrew, the founder of Aikido UK, was an 8th Dan and had a wealth of experience in Aikido. He started his Aikido journey in 1973 under Sensei Matt Tennant, who was affiliated with Sensei Williams, President, and Technical Director of the Ki Federation of Great Britain. Sensei Andrew also trained under Koichi Tohei Sensei, founder of the Ki No Kenkyukai, and Koretoshi Maruyama Sensei, founder of Aikido Yuishinkai. His extensive training and teaching experience allowed him to become a highly respected figure in the Aikido community.
