Aikido Shodokan, located in Keilor East, is a traditional martial arts school offering training in the art of Aikido. Aikido originated in 12th century Japan and has evolved over time to include competition in fighting and kata. The school's philosophy revolves around the concept of “way of harmony of the spirit”, promoting not only effective self-defence, but also health, concentration, and balance in everyday life.
Founded by Tomiki Sensei, Aikido Shodokan is the only style of Aikido that encourages competition training, allowing students to test their skills against an unwilling opponent. Through this training, students can develop confidence, courage, and a clear, calm mind, replacing surprise, doubt, fear, and confusion. The teaching system at Shodokan Aikido allows students to progress at their own pace and gain a deep understanding of Aikido principles.
Safety is of utmost importance at the school, and training is conducted with a strong emphasis on maintaining a safe learning environment. The goal is to control aggression without inflicting injury, aligning with the principle of “the art of peace”.
Shodokan Aikido draws on the principles of kendo, including distance and centre line defence, as well as the balance-breaking and training exercises of Judo. This unique combination sets Shodokan Aikido apart from other Aikido styles and enables students to improve the application of techniques through training against non-cooperative opponents.
Training at Aikido Shodokan is available for individuals aged 12 and above, and the school is conveniently located at 54A Wingara Avenue in Keilor East. The training facility is easily accessible from the Western Ring Road or Citylink and shares the space with other martial arts disciplines such as Karate, BJJ, Ju Jitsu, Kali, and Boxing.
Training sessions take place on Mondays from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM and Saturdays from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM. The fees for training are $15 per lesson or $80 per month.
