Aikido Port Kennedy is a martial arts school located in Port Kennedy, Western Australia that specialises in the traditional Japanese martial art of Aikido. Aikido is a non-competitive martial art developed by Master Morihei Ueshiba (O Sensei). It focuses on using circular movements, throws, pins, and locks to neutralise an attacker without causing them harm.
The key element of Aikido is to blend and join with the incoming energy of the attack. This means that little strength is required to perform the techniques, making it suitable for people of all ages and genders. Aikido not only teaches self-defence techniques, but also helps to train the mind, improve overall health, and develop a positive spirit.
Dave Matthews, the owner and instructor of Aikido Port Kennedy, has been practising Aikido since 1992. He started his training in Yoshinkan Aikido in Tokyo for 12 months and continued his studies in Aikido Kokikai under Shuji Ozeki Sensei in Sydney. In 2007, he joined the newly formed Aikido Yuishinkai organisation and currently holds the rank of 6th Dan black belt.
Aikido Port Kennedy offers a variety of classes for different age groups and skill levels. They have classes specifically designed for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), as well as classes for kids aged 4-7 and juniors aged 8-13. Adult classes are also available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
For those interested in joining Aikido Port Kennedy, the school recommends wearing comfortable clothing such as a t-shirt and loose-fitting pants for the first class. Aikido uniforms, or “suits,” can be purchased later if desired. The school operates on specific class schedules, which can be found on their website or by contacting them directly.
