Aikido Adelaide is a martial arts school located in Hawthorn, South Australia. The dojo is a dedicated space where individuals come together to train intensively and mindfully in various activities aimed at self-development. Unlike a gym, this dojo is a community of people who support and help each other grow, pushing themselves to personal limits and expanding their experiences and capabilities.
The main goal of Aikido Adelaide is to provide a home for a range of complementary physical disciplines that aid in improving fitness, coordination, balance, self-confidence, self-esteem, mindfulness, and overall wellbeing. The dojo welcomes individuals of all genders, ages, races, religions, and cultural backgrounds, creating a safe space for everyone to discover, explore, and overcome their own personal limitations in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
The environment at Aikido Adelaide is heavily influenced by Japanese tradition and practise, allowing individuals from any belief or cultural background to find themselves within its simple setting. Traditional Japanese martial arts, different from modern competitive sport or fighting techniques, are taught at the dojo. The emphasis is on self-development, with martial techniques serving as the tool for personal growth.
The Aikido classes at Aikido Adelaide are taught by experienced instructors Matt Teale (6th Dan, Shidoin) and Miltos Teale (2nd Dan, Fukushidoin). Matt Teale has been training in Aikido since 1986 and has achieved a 1st Dan black belt. He underwent a year of teacher training under T. K.
Chiba Shihan (8th Dan) in San Diego, USA. Miltos Teale, on the other hand, started training at a young age and has achieved a 2nd degree black belt. He is a full-time martial arts teacher and the dojo manager, offering private lessons and integrating Aikido exercises with body-weight training for improved conditioning and body awareness.
Aikido Adelaide is affiliated with the Australasian Aikikai, which is directly recognised by Hombu Dojo in Japan, the International Aikido Federation. Alongside Aikido, the school also offers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and yoga classes. The yoga classes are taught by experienced instructor Eduardo (Eddie) Dadourian, who has been teaching for the past ten years. His classes focus on Hatha Yoga, with elements of Ashtanga Vinyasa and Iyengar Yoga, emphasising alignment and breath work.
Eddie also incorporates Kriya Yoga and meditation into his classes, offering a kind and gentle approach to help practitioners connect with their bodies and minds.
