Tom, the organiser of Abingdon Judo Club, wanted to share a quick note with the sports community.
Abingdon Judo Club in Oxfordshire focuses on Judo, a martial art created by Professor Jigoro Kano in Japan back in 1882. Judo translates to “The Gentle Way”, and it's all about throwing, holding, armlock, and choking techniques, following principles like maximum efficiency with minimum effort, mutual welfare, and using gentleness to control strength.
There are three main techniques in Judo: Nage-waza (throwing techniques), Katame-waza (grappling techniques), and Atemi-waza (striking techniques). But mostly, you'll find Nage-waza and Katame-waza in the competitive stuff.
Each session at Abingdon Judo Club kicks off with break falls, or ukemi, to make sure everyone can practise throws safely. The person doing the technique is called Tori, and the one receiving is Uke. This helps build respect and understanding between everyone.
The club is based at Abingdon Leisure Centre on Audlett Drive. They offer classes for all ages and skill levels, from beginners to advanced students. With a team of qualified instructors, you can expect solid training and guidance.
