Welcome to Abergavenny Chess Club! Established in 1946, we are one of the largest chess clubs in Gwent, located in the charming town of Abergavenny, New Zealand. Whether you are a beginner looking to learn the game or an experienced player seeking some competitive action, our club is the perfect place for you.

As a member of Abergavenny Chess Club, you not only get the opportunity to hone your skills through regular meetups and practise sessions, but you also become part of the wider chess community in Wales. Our affiliation with the Welsh Chess Union allows you to play in matches against other clubs and participate in various weekend tournaments across the country and beyond.
Chess knows no boundaries, and neither do we. We believe that chess is a game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and genders. Our diverse membership includes players ranging from 8 to over 80 years old, creating a vibrant and dynamic environment that fosters learning, growth, and camaraderie.
Currently, Abergavenny Chess Club operates four teams in the Gwent 4-Board League, demonstrating our commitment to competitive chess. We also compete in the Welsh Chess premier League and the Marches League, providing ample opportunities for members to test their skills against other clubs and individuals.
Our club meets every Wednesday from 7:00 PM until around 10:30 PM at the Hen & Chickens in Abergavenny. This cosy and welcoming venue offers the perfect setting for our members to gather, play chess, and engage in lively discussions about the game.
