Abercynon Cricket Club, founded in 1903 by passionate cricketer Joe Williams, is a staple in the heart of Mountain Ash, United Kingdom. Conveniently located behind the Rugby fields, just across the bridge from the 4G football pitches and close to the local sports centre, the club is primed for easy access.
Every Saturday from May through August, Abercynon’s two senior open age teams compete in divisions 4 and 11 of the South East Wales Cricket Leagues. Here, players not only get the chance to showcase their skills but also enjoy a supportive environment. With dedicated, fully qualified coaches, regular training sessions help players sharpen their game. There’s no shortage of excitement with cup matches and even midweek T20 games on the calendar.
In a groundbreaking move, Joe introduced the club’s first women and girls' team in 2020. Regular training sessions proved so successful that the team entered the South East Wales Softball League for the 2023 season. Remarkably, two players from this initiative have already made it to the senior team. The section continues to grow, offering women and girls opportunities to connect and compete.
Youth cricket also holds a special place at Abercynon Cricket Club. The "Introduction to Hardball" sessions are perfect for kids transitioning from the All Stars and Dynamos programmes, led by Level 2 coaches ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment. The club aims to establish teams for Under 13s and Under 15s, giving young players the chance to compete locally.
For newcomers aged 8 to 11, Dynamos Cricket serves as an ideal starting point. This programme focuses on developing fundamental movement skills through an exciting game of countdown cricket. Every child who registers receives a personalised Dynamos Cricket New Balance t-shirt, making them feel like game heroes.
Abercynon Cricket Club, driven by Joe’s passion, is committed to promoting cricket at all levels, welcoming everyone from seasoned players to enthusiastic beginners. For more information on how you can join this thriving cricket community, get in touch with the club.
