And beyond. The group is led by Sifu Wilson Lo and consists of highly skilled performers who have trained in traditional martial arts and performing arts.
The Yut Hung Kung Fu Academy offers classes for kids, teens, and adults. Kids and teens classes are held on Mondays and Fridays at the Gibbons Pavilion, Radford College during school terms. Teens and adults classes are held on Sundays at the University of Canberra Refectory all year round, except during the Christmas period. The Academy follows the Covid protocols for martial arts classes as set by Kung Fu Wu Shu ACT to ensure the safety of its students.
The teachings at the Yut Hung Kung Fu Academy are based on three main styles: Yee Kuen (Yi Quan) Kung Fu, Cheng Style Ba Gwa, and the Filipino art of Black Eagle Eskrima for weaponry. Students not only attend classes but are also encouraged to practise at home with the aid of written materials and online videos. Progression is marked through gradings that involve physical, oral, and written tests under stress, along with written workbooks and assignments. Optional participation in local tournaments is also encouraged, and extra training is provided for competitors.
Beyond practical self-defence skills, the Academy fosters a sense of community and friendship among its members. Students and their parents often form close bonds and socialise at official and unofficial club events. The Academy is run traditionally, with Sifu Lo acting as a mentor and the members treating each other as brothers and sisters.
In addition to the martial arts classes, the Yut Hung Kung Fu Academy is also home to Canberra Dragon Dance, the professional Asian Performing Arts arm. Canberra Dragon Dance combines self-defence displays with wushu, lion dance, dragon dance, and Chinese percussion to create an interactive and entertaining show. The team is highly regarded in Canberra and is a prominent presence at various public and private events, festivals, workshops, and performances throughout the year.
