In 1962 Mr Kevin Gibb of Canberra, placed advertisements in newspapers in the district calling for interest in forming a Junior Rugby League Competition for boys aged 12 to 16 years. Canberra and District was split into four sections namely North – South – East and West, only three areas were interested, but these three areas decided to proceed.
In 1963 Yass, South Canberra and East Canberra started a competition with Under 14's and Under 16's, Under 12's were added in 1965 to become Canberra District Minor League.
The Yass Showground was to Yass's original home gound, many Yass men and women gave freely of their time with machinery and labour to make five extra grounds, with ex-players and current grade players acting as referees. Some rough, but great days were had.
In the early days the games were played on a Club basis meaning that all age groups played at the same ground. Nowadays there are so many clubs the games are more team driven, and it is difficult to run Club days. But with more co-operation between Clubs it is becoming possible to run Club Gala Days which foster good interclub relationships and allow supporters to see more than just one or two games a week.
Walker Park Playing fields were set in place again with parent volunteers donating their labour and expertise to make Walker Park the great facility it is today. Volunteers continue to improve Walker Park for rugby league including training lights and tree planting providing much needed shade. The next step in Walker Park development will be an extra Amenities Block on the second level, all users of Walker Park co-operate and contribute to further improve facilities for the community.
Yass Minor Rugby League will continue to provide great facilities and the opportunity for players from Under 6's to Under 16's to play the greatest game of all – Rugby League.
