About
The original Rugby League Club that represented the Wentworthville District was known as the Wentworthville Rovers; making it one of the oldest clubs in Australia. The team colours were Red and White. Mr W. (Bill) Lane was the first President and the home ground was known as Lane’s Paddocks.
After one short season, competition ceased at the outbreak of World War 1 in 1914 and did not recommence until peace was declared in late 1918, most likely in winter of 1919.
Changes occurred in 1923 and the name changed to Wentworthville Rugby League Football Club and the jersey colour changed to black.
The club was successful with a hat-trick of “A’ titles in the later part of the 1920s.
The Club in the 1920s played under the jurisdiction of the Western Districts League Association (later called Western Suburbs), an association that covered a large geographic section of Sydney’s West. Records are light on about the Club in the 1930s but by 1937 the Club was in the wilderness and was disbanded in 1938.
Re-birth came in 1940 and the Club fielded a full team plus two reserves, managed to complete the 1940 season and from this humble start a great Club grew and grew. The reformation of the Club also saw other significant changes.
Ringrose Park; a virtual mallee swamp was cleared and made playable for rugby league.
