The Wangaratta Ski Club is a historic sports club located in Wangaratta, Victoria. Established in August 1930, the club was formed by a group of 35 enthusiastic skiers with the goal of promoting skiing in the region. The club's founding members elected office bearers, including a president, vice presidents, secretary, treasurer, and committee members, who played a crucial role in shaping the club's early years.
Initially, club members would regularly ski at popular destinations such as Mount Feathertop, Mount Buffalo, and Mount Hotham. Accommodation was arranged at well-known establishments such as The Bungalow, The Chalet, and St. Bernard Hospice. However, in 1944, the club began negotiations with the Lands Department to establish a hut on Mount St.
Bernard or Mount Feathertop. After careful consideration, the members decided on the St. Bernard locality, and in August 1945, the hut trustees selected the current site.
Constructing the hut was not an easy task, as building materials were scarce due to rationing. To overcome this challenge, the club purchased a disused tobacco kiln for corrugated iron. Working parties were organised throughout the summer of 1945-46 to complete the hut, which was finally occupied by the first skiing party on June 8th, 1946. Over the years, the hut/lodge has undergone several extensions and improvements while still preserving its early charm.
The Wangaratta Ski Club takes pride in its rich traditions and its significant role in the development of skiing in Australia. Many club members have participated in prestigious skiing events, including the Winter Olympics, World Championships, World Loppet events, and State and National Championships.
