Home to some of NSW’s most untouched rural scenes, the Shire encompasses some seven and a half thousand square kilometres and is one of the few shires in Australia to boast five magnificent Rivers in its borders.
Founded in 1906, and taking its name from the Wakool River, Wakool Shire was mapped following the border (Murray River) from Barham downstream to Goodnight, then northwards to a point above the Murrumbidgee River beyond Balranald, then returning to the Murray River upstream from Barham.
The area’s natural assets prove to be a large attraction for locals and visitors alike and form the backdrop to many recreational activities.
The shire has a population of approx 4400 with the main population centres including Barham, Moulamein, Tooleybuc, Wakool, Murray Downs and Koraleigh.
The strong community participation in sporting, cultural and community activities sees an abundance of groups, facilities, and things to do right across the shire- making the area a great place to live and visit.
