The WALTR course was created to offer adults of all ages who are not early morning risers or whose life schedules do not allow them to take part in any sport very early in the morning, or who just prefer a slower start to the day, a chance to learn to row on the Swan River at Bayswater in a friendly non-rushed environment.
Whether you see yourself doing a fast, energetic row on the river or taking a quiet leisurely row absorbing the river’s nature strips, bird and marine life along the way, in solitude away from phone and the internet world, we can help you to achieve that.
No previous rowing experience is needed.
Ex-rowers wanting to return to the sport are also welcomed.
Participants need to be able to comfortably swim 100 meters (whether it be freestyle, breast stroke, side stroke, or dog paddle) in gym clothing.
The Course Content
The course is run by the ANA Rowing Club located on the shores of the Swan River near the Garret Road Bridge at Bayswater.
Each course runs over 3 consecutive weeks, on 3 days of each week. There is a new module covered each day covering a new topic which needs to be completed before proceeding to the next day’s lesson.
The course is run from 9.30am to11.00am on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday of each week.
Skills Taught
Participants will receive indoor and on-water instruction focussing on single scull rowing.
Week 1: covers the basics of rowing with an introduction to learning about the different types of rowing boats, and the basics skills of how to row in a single scull.
Week 2: follows on from knowledge gained in Week 1 with more advanced lessons on refining your rowing technique to help make your rowing more balanced and enjoyable in a single scull.
Week 3: brings together the culmination of techniques and skills learned in weeks 1 & 2 to help make you a confident and capable rower in a single scull.
Throughout the course you will be taught about safety on the river and understanding the associated weather and water conditions, and you will be chaperoned on the river throughout the course by experienced rowers.
At the end of the course you will be invited to join the ANA Rowing Club to continue your rowing as a recreational member. Once you are a Club member there will also be the opportunity to join in crew boats on a recreational level and/or to join teams for competition racing.
Membership will also offer you the chance to meet new friends and to share in Club activities.
Cost of the Course:
$50.00 each week (3 lessons) which needs to be paid online prior to the start of each week.
You have the option of paying weekly which allows you to decide if you want to progress to the next week/s. OR you can elect to pay for the full 3-week course in one payment of $150.00.
Fees are non-refundable.
Note: If you choose to join the ANA Rowing Club, week 3 fees will be applied pro-rata to your membership fees
Whether you are 18 or 98, young in body or young at heart, this course just might introduce you to your new sport and/or recreational pastime.
Come give it a go and see!
