Today, UWA Fencing Club is a thriving sports club in Perth, offering fencing programmes for individuals of all skill levels. Whether you're a beginner looking to learn a new sport or a competitive fencer wanting to push your limits, UWA Fencing Club has something for everyone.
With a focus on inclusivity, the club welcomes members of all ages, fitness levels, and abilities. Wheelchair participants are also encouraged to join. The club aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for everyone to learn and enjoy the sport of fencing.
The club's roots trace back to 1947 when it was originally formed by Mr Ken Anketell. It operated in Matilda Bay and had 26 members at the time. Throughout the years, the club faced periods of decline and reformation as different generations of fencers discovered the abandoned gear and revitalised the club. In the 1960s, Ron Newick played a significant role in restarting the club as an instructor.
By the 1990s, the club expanded its membership beyond UWA students and opened its doors to the wider community.
UWA Fencing Club is located in the UWA Claremont gymnasium at the International Martial Arts Centre (IMAC). The club holds training sessions on various days of the week, catering to different age groups and experience levels. From under 14s to intermediate fencers and adults, there are opportunities for everyone to participate and improve their fencing skills.
