Sydney City Ballet School is a prestigious ballet school located in Sydney, Australia. It was founded in 2005 by former Tokyo City Ballet soloist Hanako Kitazawa, making it the first ballet school in Sydney to teach ballet exclusively in Japanese.
The school offers classes for children ranging from toddlers who want to start ballet as a form of artistic education to teenagers aiming to win competitions. The curriculum emphasises the importance of practising ballet seriously, while instilling Japanese virtues such as respect and harmony among the Japanese children residing in Sydney.
For adults, the school offers a variety of classes catering to different skill levels. From beginner classes for those taking their first steps into the world of ballet to intermediate classes that aim to enable students to dance en pointe, anyone can find a class suitable for their level of expertise.
In terms of scheduling, the school generally follows the term dates of public schools in the area. The fourth term for 2023, for example, runs from October 9 to December 16.
Sydney City Ballet School is currently accepting new students. For children, the school offers Angel Class (3-5 years old) on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, and Fairy Class (Kindy, Y1-2) on Tuesdays from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm, Wednesdays from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm, and Saturdays from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. Attendance requires children to have their hair tied up, wear comfortable clothing, bring socks and a water bottle, and have their parents present during the trial lessons.
For adults, the Level 1, 2, and 3 classes are open for enrolment throughout the year. Additionally, the school offers various other classes such as Pilates, Ballet for Beginners, Belly Dance, Aroma Yoga, and regular Yoga. Each class is instructed by experienced professionals who encourage students to explore and enjoy their chosen art form.
The school also provides rental studios, with large and small spaces available for short-term rental starting from one hour. As the studios are equipped with dance mats, outdoor shoes are strictly prohibited, and only soft shoes or socks are allowed. This makes them ideal for activities such as Yoga and Pilates.
