About
The question was asked “Why a club for the Spitz Breeds? ” There were at the time a couple of good reasons. First, most of the Spitz Breeds in this state were numerically low which barred the formation of a breed club and secondly, all Spitz have points in common viz pricked ears, an over the back tail and a double coat. A number of the breeds share a common ancestry and with seventeen breeds recognised with the Australian National Kennel Council a formidable line-up would be assured.
The idea was put to me by Glenys Lewis and after talking to many Spitz owners a meeting was held on 17th June 1986 at the Goodwood Orphanage, where the Spitz Breeds Club of South Australia was formed.
Dr Bruce Eastick was nominated for and duly accepted the patronage of the Club.
The Club lodged an application for affiliation with the South Australian Canine Association which was duly granted.
At a subsequent Committee Meeting the Club colours were decided, orange, white and black, these being found in various hues in all Spitz Breeds. A title for the Club's Magazine was adopted and Spitz and Pieces came into being.
A competition for the design of the Club Logo attracted a number of entries with six being placed before an impartial adjudicator. The winning entry was the now familiar octagonal design of the writer.
Our first Fun Day competition was held at the Goodwood Orphanage on Saturday 8th November 1986 and was judged by Mr Neville Hallion.
