In Australia, Special Olympics began in 1976 and continues to seek public support to ensure that individuals with an intellectual disability are not shut out. By providing opportunities for individuals to participate in sport, the club aims to open the door to personal achievement, pride, and social inclusion.
Special Olympics Clubs – North Coast aims to increase awareness and participation in sport for individuals with an intellectual disability. With only 3,000 athletes currently participating with Special Olympics Australia out of the 850,000 people with intellectual disabilities and/or autism in the country, they need support to reach more individuals and spread the joy of sport and community.
