Member of the Special Olympics Australia team. She competed in athletics and won two gold medals. This is just one example of the talent and determination that can be found within the Melbourne West Club of Special Olympics.
Special Olympics Clubs – Melbourne West is a sports club in Melbourne dedicated to providing sport, recreation, social, and health opportunities for people with an intellectual disability. The club is proud to be a part of the Special Olympics network and is committed to helping individuals have fun, be healthy, build self-esteem, demonstrate courage, and make friends.
Special Olympics Australia is a part of the global Special Olympics movement, which was founded almost 50 years ago by the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Today, Special Olympics supports over 5 million athletes in 177 countries. In Australia, Special Olympics began in 1976 and continues to seek public support to ensure that individuals with an intellectual disability are not shut out. By giving them opportunities to play sport, the Melbourne West Club and Special Olympics Australia aim to open the door to personal achievement, pride, and inclusion for marginalised and isolated members of the community.
The Melbourne West Club believes in the power of sport to create a better world, much like the Olympics and Paralympics. Special Olympics differs in its focus and level of awareness and funding. Special Olympics is a year-round multi-sports programme for people with an intellectual disability of all capabilities, providing them with access to robust competition pathways, including the World Games, which is hosted on a four-year cycle in summer and winter sports. Despite the many successes of the Special Olympics movement, the awareness and funding levels are still not at the same level as the Olympics and Paralympics.
The Melbourne West Club aims to change that by spreading the joy of sport and community and increasing its reach with the support of the public.
Having an intellectual disability means that individuals may find it difficult to perform basic tasks that others may take for granted. However, it does not mean that they cannot learn or succeed. They may just learn differently or require more time and support. The Melbourne West Club believes in making ability visible and focuses on uncovering hidden talents through sport.
The club aims to create an inclusive and supportive community where individuals can grow, learn, and achieve their dreams.
By supporting Special Olympics Clubs – Melbourne West, individuals can contribute to the mission of providing opportunities and support for individuals with an intellectual disability. Whether through donations, volunteering, or participating in the club's programmes and events, everyone can play a role in spreading joy, inclusion, and the power of sport within the community.
