Southern Canberra Gymnastics Club (SCGC) is a sports club located in Canberra, Australia. As the largest purpose-built facility in the area, SCGC offers a range of gymnastics programmes for children and adults of all ages and skill levels.
The club is proud to acknowledge the support and funding provided by Gymnastics ACT during the challenging year of 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. This support has allowed SCGC to continue offering top-quality gymnastics programmes to the Canberra community.
For children, SCGC provides a comprehensive range of programmes tailored to different age groups and abilities. The GYMSTART programme is designed for children aged 18 months to 5 years, focusing on developing gross motor coordination and hand-eye coordination through specially modified apparatus. The programme includes activities such as balance beams, mini trampolines, bars, rings, tunnels, springboards, and tumbling mats. Cooperative group activities are also incorporated to foster social skills and concentration.
GYMSTART classes include Kindergym (18 months – 3 years), GymFun (3 years), GymSkills (4 years), and JuniorGym (5 years).
For children aged 6 and older, the Pre-Levels programme serves as a stepping stone from the beginners' programme, introducing dominant movement patterns used in gymnastics. The ACT Club Levels Programme for girls and Gym Jets, Gym Rockets, and Teen Programme for boys make up the General Stream, which provides a state-supported programme for gymnasts of all abilities to achieve their individual goals in a flexible training environment.
The National Stream programme is a competitive programme for children who have shown natural potential for the sport. Gymnasts are selected from the General Stream to participate in this programme, which is available for both boys and girls. Parents of invited gymnasts receive a full information pack about the programme.
SCGC also offers the GymFit Schools Programme, which brings gymnastics directly into Canberra primary schools. Qualified coaches deliver the programme on-site, aiming to develop children's enthusiasm for physical activity and fundamental movement abilities. The programme can be modified to suit individual school needs and usually runs for a 10-week term.
For children looking to stay active during school holidays, SCGC provides a School Holiday Programme. Open to girls and boys aged 3 and over, regardless of experience or ability, the programme offers the opportunity to learn new gymnastics skills, play games, and engage in interesting group activities. The fully equipped facility at SCGC provides a safe and stimulating environment for children to enjoy their holiday break.
Southern Canberra Gymnastics Club is dedicated to providing a supportive and inclusive environment for all members. With its wide range of programmes, state-of-the-art facilities, and experienced coaching staff, SCGC is the premier choice for gymnastics in Canberra.
