Southern Athletic Club Inc. is a sports club located in Adelaide, South Australia. Established in 1989, the club is dedicated to supporting its members in enjoying athletics and reaching their performance potential. The club's vision is to develop a sustainable, inclusive, community-based athletics club that promotes healthy, active lifestyles, supports athletes in achieving their goals, and becomes the preferred club for athletes and coaches in the southern region.
Southern Athletic Club welcomes athletes of all ages and abilities, providing them with the means to train and compete in a supportive and enjoyable environment. The club's athletes participate in Athletics SA track and field events, SA Athletic League meets throughout the state during the summer, cross country races in winter, and year-round road and trail events.
The club boasts a team of qualified, experienced, and motivated coaches who specialise in various disciplines. These coaches work with athletes at all levels, from beginners to national-level competitors, including those with aspirations to compete internationally.
Training sessions for track and field take place on Wednesdays from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm at Christies Beach High School under the guidance of club coaches Trish McHendrie, Mathew Bruniges, and Mark Secomb. Additionally, specialist coach Mark Secomb runs throws and sprints training sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays. The club can also connect new members with specialist coaches who offer sessions at Mile End.
For recreational running, the club offers interval sessions on Tuesday mornings and evenings, as well as Thursday morning sessions at the Christies Beach Esplanade. Social runs are held on Friday evenings, and long runs are organised on Sundays. Membership for Southern Athletic Club is open for the 2023-2024 season. Benefits of membership include Athletics SA membership, personal accident insurance, exclusive discounts through Sharky Perks, access to qualified coaching, access to the club's home ground at Knox Park starting in March 2024, an inclusive and supportive environment, opportunities for social and community engagement, as well as participation in club and team events. Membership fees, which include recreational ASA membership, are $60 for the early bird rate until the end of October, and $70 thereafter.
