SouthWest Judo Academy is a sports club located in Perth, Western Australia. Established in 2005 by coach and owner Simon Read, the academy has since grown to become one of Western Australia’s largest judo clubs.
The journey of SouthWest Judo Academy began at Tranby College in Baldivis, where the first dojo was located. Over the years, the academy relocated to different venues to accommodate its growing membership. In January 2010, they settled in Port Kennedy, where they currently reside. The state-of-the-art facility at Sunlight Drive boasts a 154 square metre mat area and offers ample seating for parents and friends.
In September 2017, SouthWest Judo Academy opened its new training facility, featuring a 276 square metre mat area and a dedicated gym. This advancement marked a significant milestone in the club's history, providing an even better training experience for its members.
The club offers a wide range of classes for all ages and skill levels. Their timetable includes classes for different age groups, starting from as young as 3–4 years old. The EbiKids programme is an introductory judo class aimed at the youngest children, focusing on developing essential skills necessary for their overall development. For children aged 5-8, the Monstars programme introduces more judo-specific skills while continuing to foster their overall growth.
The Juniors programme, tailored for ages 9-14, focuses on developing judo-specific skills and encourages friendly competition to build resilience and camaraderie among students. The Seniors programme, designed for those aged 15 and above, offers a similar focus on judo skills development, creating a challenging and rewarding environment for experienced judo practitioners.
