Skipping Australia is a well-established sports club in Canberra, Australia that specialises in the sport of rope skipping or jump rope. The club was founded in 1984 by Lorraine Bannerman, a teacher at Kurrajong, NSW school, who formed the Heart Foundation Demonstration Team known as the Aussie Ropers.
Since its inception, Skipping Australia has grown significantly and has become one of the leading clubs in the country. The club has produced competitive skippers who are world ranked and has gained recognition both nationally and internationally. In fact, Australia is one of over 68 countries actively participating in rope skipping, with the International Jump Rope Union (IJRU) being the world governing body.
In line with the Olympic movement, IJRU has established five continental areas, including the Oceania Rope Skipping Association (ORSA) which Australia is a part of. This demonstrates the commitment of skipping as a sport towards inclusion in the Olympics.
Skipping Australia is proud to have hosted the first World Rope Skipping Championships in Sydney, NSW in 1997, which saw the participation of one Australian team. Since then, the sport has gained popularity, leading to the establishment of many clubs across the country.
The club is led by a dedicated team of executive and non-executive members who work together to ensure the smooth running of the organisation. The executive team includes Co-Presidents Claire George and Kirralee Larkin, Vice President Craig Gilbert, Secretary Fiona Mol, Treasurer Luke Winstanley, and Rules & Judging Director Taryn Hodgson, among others.
Skipping Australia also has various subcommittees, such as the Rules Committee and the Athletes Council, which play a vital role in the development and growth of the sport within the club.
In addition to its commitment to competitive rope skipping, Skipping Australia also focuses on providing a safe and inclusive environment for its members. The club adheres to the guidelines set by the Member Protection Officer and constantly strives to promote fair play, respect, and integrity.
