Shinbukan Sutherland

Shinbukan Sutherland is a Japanese martial arts academy located in Sydney, Australia. Established in 1978 by Soke Kazuo Saito, Shinbukan is dedicated to empowering students through a unique learning environment known as the Dojo. In this high-pressure, ego-free collective space, students are consciously and unconsciously tested to expand their physical, mental, and spiritual capacities.

At Shinbukan, the Dojo is more than just a training ground; it is a place where individuals can tap into their primal instincts and intuition, encouraging them to “feel” rather than solely “think. ” The Dojo serves as a sanctuary from the busy modern society, providing students with the tools to cope and thrive. Here, students of all ages and skill levels are welcomed, from kids to adults.

For kids, Shinbukan offers Kids Karate classes that go beyond developing functional strength, mobility, and striking skills. Through the Japanese Dojo system, children are instilled with values of 100% effort, humility, focus, and cooperation. The ultimate goal is to encourage the process of unmolding, allowing true autonomy to flourish by going beyond the system, rather than away from it.

Adults at Shinbukan have the opportunity to delve into the world of Ninjutsu, a traditional mixed martial art originating from Japan. Incorporating elements of Judo, Japanese Jujitsu, Aikido, and Kobudo (weapons), Ninjutsu provides a balanced martial arts experience. The essence of Japanese martial arts culture, particularly the spiritual aspect, is deeply ingrained in the teachings at Shinbukan, with the aim of synthesising it into day-to-day life.

Shinbukan takes pride in its dojo community, which fosters a sense of belonging and growth. Soke Kazuo Saito, the founder of Shinbukan, migrated from Japan to Australia and has been spreading the teachings of Karate and Ninjutsu ever since. Instructors at Shinbukan are highly experienced, with at least seven years of martial arts training, and some boasting over 30 years of experience. Each instructor brings their own unique talents and teaching styles to the academy, creating a diverse and enriching learning environment.
